Man fighting for life after Smethwick assault

A man is fighting for his life after being seriously assaulted near Smethwick High Street. West Midlands Police were called to St Paul's Road, just off Tollhouse Lane, shortly before 8.30pm on Sunday, where they discovered the victim with critical injuries.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was rushed to hospital with injuries described as 'life-threatening.' A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding and remains in police custody for questioning.

Scene cordoned off

On Monday, a section of wasteland and the walkway adjacent to the main council car park remained sealed off as officers conducted forensic searches and appealed to local businesses for CCTV footage.

Police appeal

Detectives are in the early stages of their investigation. A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: 'We are investigating after a man was seriously assaulted on St Paul's Road, Smethwick. Officers attended and a man in his 50s was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding and remains in custody. We are conducting a thorough search to understand exactly what happened.'
