A man who groomed and raped a young girl after befriending her on the internet has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
Prolific Offender Met Victim Online
William Preece, aged 36 and from Huddersfield, began communicating with the child in 2021. Over time, they exchanged a large number of messages before arranging to meet on several occasions in Staffordshire. It was during these meetings that Preece committed his crimes.
Strong Evidence Secured Conviction
When initially questioned by police, Preece answered 'no comment' to every enquiry. However, investigators from Staffordshire Police gathered compelling evidence, leading to charges of two counts of rape of a girl and one count of sexual assault of a girl. Preece later pleaded guilty to all offences at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
On Monday, 1 December 2025, he was handed a 17-year prison sentence. The court also imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, placed him on the Sex Offenders Register for life, and issued a restraining order to protect the survivor.
Police Send Message of Support to Survivors
Detective Constable Angela Maxfield, who worked on the case, stated: “Preece was prolific in his offending and has rightfully been put behind bars for his crimes.” She emphasised the force's commitment to supporting victims, adding: “I want this to serve as a message to any survivors of rape and sexual offences that we are here to support you and to act against those responsible.”
Detective Inspector Adam Goodger, from the force's public protection unit, reinforced this message. He said: “We’re determined to seek the toughest possible punishment in court for those responsible for violence, abuse and intimidation against women and girls in Staffordshire. I’m pleased that we’ve been able to build all of the evidence needed to secure this outcome against a sex offender who committed a series of crimes in our community.”
The police have urged anyone affected by similar crimes, regardless of when they occurred, to come forward and report them.
