Police Target Dangerous and Uninsured Drivers in Midlands Crackdown
Midlands Police Day of Action on Road Safety

Motorists across the West Midlands have been issued a stark warning as police launch a major day of action specifically targeting drivers who pose a risk to others. West Midlands Police is deploying significant resources on Wednesday, November 26, in a concerted effort to make the region's roads safer.

What the Operation Involves

The intensive crackdown, part of Operation Advance, will see a force-wide focus on road safety across Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull, and Coventry. Officers from the dedicated Road Harm Prevention Team and the Commercial Vehicle Unit will be at the forefront of the action.

They will be joined by partner agencies for Multi-Agency Road Safety Operations (MARSO). The police will be utilising a range of advanced resources, including drone teams and specialist police dogs trained to detect drugs, firearms, and digital devices. Wider operational units will support the initiative throughout the day and night.

Who is the Target?

The primary focus of the operation is on two types of motorists: dangerous drivers and uninsured drivers. Police have stated they will be specifically targeting offenders who commit 'Fatal 4' offences, which include speeding, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

Chief Superintendent Sarah Burton, who oversees the Operations Unit, emphasised the force's commitment. "Today is about showing our commitment to road safety and working together with our partners, reducing the number of deaths and serious injury on our roads," she said. "Our focus remains on targeting motorists who are a risk to our roads."

Long-Term Vision for Safer Roads

This day of action is a key part of the force's broader strategy to achieve Vision Zero – an ambitious goal to halve the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads by 2030 and reduce it to zero by 2040. Alongside enforcement, officers will be conducting road safety awareness activities outside schools and carrying out taxi operations.

The Motor Insurance Bureau will also be working directly with police units in known hotspots to identify and prosecute uninsured drivers. A police spokesperson reiterated that road safety is everyone's responsibility and called on the public to play their part. Residents were advised to follow the force's TrafficWMP channels on Facebook, X, and Instagram for live updates on the operation.
