A Merseyside Police officer has appeared in court, denying a charge of causing death by careless driving after a young carer was struck and killed on Christmas Eve.
Court Appearance and Plea
PC Scott Thompson, aged 32, stood in the dock at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Monday, November 24, 2025. The officer, based in Wavertree, Liverpool, formally pleaded not guilty to the charge relating to the death of 22-year-old Rachael Moore.
The tragic incident occurred just after 8pm on December 24, 2022, in Sheil Road, located in Liverpool's Kensington area. Thompson was responding to an unrelated emergency call at the time of the collision.
Victim's Story and Aftermath
Rachael Moore, originally from Derby, was a university student living in Liverpool. She was walking home from her shift as a carer when she was struck by the police vehicle.
Emergency services attended the scene, but tragically, the young woman could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the location.
Legal Proceedings Continue
Thompson has elected to have his case heard by a jury at a crown court rather than being dealt with at the magistrates' court level. The officer was granted unconditional bail and will next appear at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester on January 8.
The case continues to develop as the family of Rachael Moore seeks justice for their loss during what should have been a festive family celebration.
