Police Issue Urgent Warning Over Distraction Burglaries Targeting Elderly in Black Country
West Midlands Police have issued a stark warning to residents across the Black Country following a concerning series of distraction burglaries specifically targeting elderly individuals. The alert comes after three separate incidents occurred in Sandwell between February 12 and 18, where fraudsters gained entry to homes under false pretenses.
Modus Operandi: Posing as Utility Workers
The criminals have been employing a consistent and deceptive method. They approach homes pretending to be from the water board or gas engineers, claiming there is an urgent issue with water or gas supplies that requires immediate attention. This tactic is designed to create concern and distract the homeowner.
Once the resident is engaged, the fraudsters work in teams. While one individual keeps the homeowner occupied with their fabricated story, other members of the group enter the property to search for and steal cash. In the three reported cases this month, cash was successfully taken from two victims. The third victim challenged the intruders, who then left without taking anything.
West Bromwich Identified as Primary Target Area
Police have identified West Bromwich as the specific area where these incidents have been concentrated. However, authorities are warning that this criminal activity could potentially spread to other parts of the region. The Rowley WMP account on X (formerly Twitter) emphasized the need for community vigilance, stating: "We're reminding people to be vigilant and look out for elderly family members and neighbours following a series of distraction burglaries in Sandwell, specifically West Bromwich."
Police Investigation and Public Safety Advice
Detectives are actively investigating these incidents and believe all three burglaries are linked due to the identical methods used. Officers have reminded the public of several crucial safety measures:
- Verify Identities: The water board no longer exists. Always ask for official identification from anyone claiming to be from a utility company.
- Use Door Chains: Keep doors secured with chains when answering to unexpected callers.
- Community Watch: Look out for elderly relatives, friends, and neighbours, reminding them about the dangers of bogus callers.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you see anything suspicious or have relevant information, contact police immediately.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward by calling 101. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111. The force emphasizes that community cooperation is essential in preventing further incidents and apprehending those responsible for these distressing crimes against vulnerable residents.
