Prison officer attack: Inmate gets 2 more years for faeces assault
Prisoner sentenced for faeces attack on officers

A convicted rapist has been handed an additional two-year prison sentence after carrying out a vile attack on two prison officers, leaving them hospitalised after dousing them with a bucket filled with human waste.

Revolting Assault Behind Bars

Ian Ochieng, 32, who was already serving a 12-year sentence for rape, targeted the guards at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire on February 28 last year. Without any warning, Ochieng approached officers Lewis Heal and Michael O'Hare and emptied the foul concoction of urine and faeces over them.

The court heard the contents entered the mouths of both victims, requiring immediate medical attention. They were rushed to hospital for precautionary injections to prevent potential infection from the noxious substance.

Devastating Impact on Victims

The horrific assault had a profound effect on both officers. Prosecutor John Brotherton revealed that Michael O'Hare was left feeling so contaminated that he could not embrace his wife and baby for several days following the incident.

Both officers continue to suffer from the psychological trauma of the attack, with one expressing constant worry about when the next assault might occur. The court described the lasting impact on the victims as "devastating".

Sentencing and Wider Context

Ochieng appeared via video link from HMP Wakefield at Worcester Crown Court on Tuesday, November 4, where he admitted two charges of administering a poison/noxious thing with intent.

Judge Seanin Gilmore handed down a two-year prison term to run consecutively to his existing sentence, stating: "You administered a noxious substance, a mix of urine and faeces, which you threw over two prison officers."

The case highlights growing concerns about prison safety, with Ministry of Justice statistics revealing 10,568 assaults on prison staff in the 12 months to March 2025 - a 7% increase from the previous year.
