Prolific Shoplifter Banned from All Tesco in Derby

Police have released an image of a prolific shoplifter who has been banned from every Tesco supermarket in a Midlands city. Bailey Esmonde, 22, has been ordered not to enter any Tesco stores or shops in Derby following a string of thefts. The restriction is part of a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) imposed on him for three years.

Latest Theft Incident

Esmonde entered the Tesco Express store on St Peter’s Street on Monday, March 30, and stole two cans of cider without paying. Two days later, he was arrested for possessing a wrap of cocaine. Officers reviewed CCTV footage from the store and identified him as the thief.

Court Appearance

Esmonde, of no fixed abode, was charged with shop theft and possession of crack cocaine. He pleaded guilty to both charges at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, April 2. The court issued a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered him to pay compensation for the stolen alcohol.

Previous Criminal Behaviour Order

Esmonde had already been subject to a CBO imposed in 2024 after he admitted stealing a can of Monster energy drink, two packets of sandwiches, a bag of crisps, and a bag of chicken bites from Tesco Express on London Road in Alvaston. Initially, the ban only covered that specific store. However, following his latest theft in March, police successfully applied to extend the CBO to include all Tesco shops in Derby.

What is a Criminal Behaviour Order?

A CBO can be issued by any criminal court against a person convicted of an offence. It is used to tackle the most persistent anti-social individuals who are also engaged in criminal activity. The order aims to prevent further offending and protect the community.
