Redditch Rogue Trader Jailed for £120k Fraud Affecting Health

Redditch Fraudster Sentenced to Five-and-a-Half Years for £120,000 Home Improvement Scam

A rogue trader from Redditch has been jailed after his fraudulent activities left homeowners physically ill, having swindled them out of more than £120,000 in total. Daniel Footman, aged 46, preyed on residents across the country who were seeking home improvements, taking their money and either failing to start jobs, leaving them incomplete, or delivering substandard work.

Victims Suffer Severe Health Impacts from Financial and Emotional Harm

Among Footman's 31 victims, many provided statements detailing how his lies and deceit severely impacted their mental health. Several reported that the financial and emotional stress caused by the conman led to physical illnesses, highlighting the profound personal toll of his crimes. Footman also failed to pay numerous tradesmen and small businesses who worked for him, accumulating substantial debts to suppliers.

Investigation and Court Proceedings Reveal Pattern of Deceit

Footman and his company, Opulent Lifestyle Ltd, were investigated by Trading Standards following a significant number of complaints from residents in Worcestershire and beyond. His fraudulent activities occurred between October 2016 and December 2022, during which he repeatedly lied to his victims. At a court hearing, Footman pleaded guilty to two offences of fraudulent trading.

He was sentenced at Hereford Crown Court on Friday, February 13, receiving five-and-a-half years in prison. Additionally, Footman, of Pinnacle House, 632 Evesham Road, Redditch, was disqualified from being a company director for 10 years.

Judge Condemns "Dishonest Crook" for Manipulative Behavior

Passing sentence, Judge HHJ Jackson described Footman as having "lied and lied," labeling him "thoroughly manipulative" and "nothing but a dishonest crook." The judge noted that Footman appeared to have waited for the expiry of a previous suspended prison sentence before resuming virtually identical fraudulent conduct. This case marked the second prosecution brought against Footman by Worcestershire's Trading Standards team, with the county council having prosecuted him for similar offenses a decade ago.

Council Officials Emphasize Importance of Trading Standards Work

Councillor Ian Cresswell of Worcestershire County Council stated, "This case demonstrates how vital the work of our Trading Standards team is. This is a significant sentence and shows how seriously the courts view this type of offending." Simon Wilkes, Head of Trading Standards for Worcestershire County Council, added, "Investigating complex fraud offences, often committed against vulnerable people, is becoming one of the main areas of work for our Trading Standards team. Unscrupulous and dishonest traders tempted to operate in our area are warned that we will not hesitate to take similar action against anyone who exploits vulnerable people in our county."

The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who engage in fraudulent trading, particularly when it causes such severe harm to victims' well-being.
