Police are intensifying their search for Sharam Muhamadi, a 21-year-old convicted child sex trafficker who disappeared before his sentencing and was last seen in Birmingham. Muhamadi was granted bail ahead of his trial at Sheffield Crown Court on May 18 but failed to appear. He was convicted in his absence on June 9 of two counts of arranging or facilitating travel of another person with a view to exploitation. He should have faced sentencing today, June 11.
What Did He Do?
Seven girls bravely disclosed sexual abuse that led to the conviction of Muhamadi and Bawan Hawre. The victims, aged between 12 and 16 at the time, were targeted by the two men. Hawre, 28, formerly of Doncaster, was found guilty of multiple offences including rape, arranging travel for exploitation, and false imprisonment. He pleaded guilty to one count of rape before the trial. Muhamadi was convicted of arranging or facilitating travel for exploitation.
The investigation began in August 2024 after one victim disclosed abuse during routine safeguarding. The offenders used fake names—'Karo' for Hawre and 'Jack' for Muhamadi—to contact the girls via social media, offering vapes and money. They arranged meetings and transported the girls between Barnsley and Doncaster. Six of the girls were given alcohol and drugs before being raped by Hawre.
Where Was Muhamadi Seen?
Muhamadi, of Hexthorpe Road, Doncaster, has links to the West Midlands. He travelled by train to Birmingham New Street Station between May 16 and May 18. The last confirmed sighting was in Birmingham city centre at around 9pm on May 18. He then took a taxi towards Coventry Road and the Small Heath Park area.
What Have Police Said?
Assistant Chief Constable Hayley Barnett of South Yorkshire Police stated: 'Our priority has been and will continue to be securing full justice for the victims. They have shown commendable bravery. We are wholly focused on finding Muhamadi and ensuring he faces the consequences of his actions.' She added that officers have been relentlessly pursuing all lines of enquiry and believe he is still in the UK. If found abroad, they will seek government help to extradite him.
