The family of a beloved Shropshire mother have issued a heartfelt tribute, describing her as a 'bright and engaging' woman, following her death which has sparked a murder investigation.
Police Discovery in Prees Heath
Rita Rowley, aged 84, was found deceased by officers from West Mercia Police at a property located in Prees Heath, Whitchurch, Shropshire, on January 27. During the same incident, an 80-year-old man was discovered at the address with life-threatening injuries.
The man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder and remains hospitalised in a critical condition. Authorities have confirmed they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with Rita's death.
A Life of Love, Travel, and Community Spirit
In a moving statement, Rita's children paid tribute to their mother's remarkable life and character. "We would like to pay tribute to our loving mum Rita, she with our late father Colin raised us to be caring and kind," the family said.
Rita's life was marked by independence and adventure. She met and married her husband, Colin, in Malta while he was serving in the RAF, bravely relocating to a new country away from her Maltese family.
Professionally, she worked diligently as a seamstress with a great passion for fashion, always presenting herself as a smartly dressed woman. Together with Colin, she shared a profound love of travel, enjoying meeting new people across the globe.
Passions and Pastimes
Even after her husband's passing, Rita continued to travel solo or with friends, both within the UK and abroad, with a particular fondness for revisiting her beloved Malta.
Her home was often filled with music, as she adored dancing and had a special affection for artists like Elvis Presley and Johnny Mathis, though she also appreciated modern tunes.
A keen gardener, Rita cultivated her own vegetable patch and flower garden upon moving to Higher Heath. She was an exceptional plantswoman, skilled in propagation from cuttings and seeds, and generously shared her horticultural successes with others.
Compassion for Creatures and Community
Rita's kindness extended to animals; she regularly fed stray cats and garden birds, with her garden featuring numerous bird feeders. A favourite robin would even wait by her back door to be fed.
Her enduring Catholic faith and friendly personality fostered a strong sense of community. She dedicated over 20 years as a volunteer at the Age UK daycare centre in Whitchurch and often drove people to appointments, assisted with shopping, and helped with household tasks.
A Legacy of Support and Strength
"Mum always worked hard throughout her life; she was always there for us and encouraged and supported us to do well," the family's statement continued.
They expressed how greatly she will be missed, noting that even as Alzheimer's disease began to affect her confidence and sociability, she remained bright and engaging. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time as they mourn their loss.
The investigation into Rita Rowley's death continues, with West Mercia Police providing updates as appropriate.
