Historic Solihull Pub's Collapsing Barn Saved for Restaurant Transformation
A Grade II listed pub in Solihull has been granted permission to rescue a deteriorating barn and transform it into a new restaurant space, ensuring the preservation of this historic asset.
Urgent Action Needed for Barn Structure
The Bulls Head pub in Barston submitted an application to Solihull Council, highlighting that the barn was "showing evidence of collapse" and required immediate intervention. The pub applied for listed building consent in December last year, with planning agents Concorde BGW stating that the structure is being supported by temporary scaffolding due to significant movement in the walls and a truss that has dropped to the floor.
The proposed works are essential for this building to be returned to a safe working site, the planning statement emphasized, noting that any additional renovations would allow the barn to serve as a restaurant and function room—a facility deemed necessary for the village community.
Support from Local Authorities
During the consultation period, Barston Parish Council expressed strong support for the project, describing it as an appropriate and sustainable form of heritage-led development. They believe the conversion will secure the long-term viability of the listed building, which is registered as an asset of community value.
Historic England raised no objections to the plan, further bolstering the approval process. On March 30, Mark Andrews, the council's head of planning, design, and engagement services, issued a decision granting listed building consent, subject to specific conditions.
Details of the Approved Plans
The permission encompasses several key elements:
- Conversion of the barn into a restaurant and function room space
- Installation of new doors and windows
- Creation of a new connection between the barn and the existing garden area
- Development of a new patio area
The Bulls Head Inn, dating back to the 17th century, currently operates as a public house with a bar, dining area, and commercial kitchen. It is considered an integral part of the picturesque village of Barston, and this project aims to enhance its role in the community while preserving its historical significance.
