A man and a woman have been arrested following the tragic death of a baby in Gateshead. The incident occurred after ambulance crews were called to an address in Deckham on Thursday, May 28.

Paramedics alerted police to concerns for the child's welfare at approximately 1:45 PM. The infant was rushed to a hospital but succumbed shortly after arrival.

Northumbria Police have arrested a man on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child. A woman has been arrested on suspicion of neglect. Both individuals have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

A police spokesperson stated: "Shortly after 1:45 PM yesterday, we received a report via the ambulance service of concern for the welfare of a baby in the Gateshead area. The baby was taken to hospital but tragically died a short time later. Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this time."

Investigation Ongoing

The spokesperson added: "We immediately launched an investigation, and two people have been arrested in connection with the report. A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child, and a woman has been arrested on suspicion of neglect. Both have been released on police bail pending further enquiries."
