Telford and Wrekin Council Greenlights Major Housing Development in Priorslee
Telford and Wrekin Council has officially approved a significant £31.7 million housing scheme that will see the construction of over 100 new homes in the Priorslee area. This decision marks a pivotal step in addressing local housing needs and supporting community growth.
Details of the Approved Development Plan
The council has given the go-ahead to housebuilder Avant Homes to erect 135 properties on an eight-acre site located in Priorslee. This development, known as Priory Orchard, is part of the larger Monks Wood initiative, which encompasses a total investment of £54 million for 184 homes. The initial application was submitted in July of the previous year, and after careful review and amendments, final approval was granted.
Key features of the plan include:
- Eight one-bedroom flats added to the original proposal
- 33 units designated as affordable housing to promote accessibility
- Integration into the Priorslee East Strategic Urban Extension, which aims to deliver up to 1,100 new homes overall
Construction Timeline and Community Impact
Construction for the first phase of Priory Orchard is scheduled to commence in the spring of this year, with residents expected to move into the new homes by autumn. This rapid timeline underscores the urgency and demand for housing in the region.
Luke Scarborough, Managing Director of Avant Homes West Midlands, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "As a housebuilder, our aim is to provide quality new homes for everyone, and Priory Orchard is an excellent example of this commitment in action. Our Monkswood development has proven hugely popular with first-time buyers and young families in Priorslee, and we are pleased to bring forward the second phase in response to strong local demand."
He added, "We now look forward to starting works at the second phase of our development and continue to grow this thriving community we have created in Priorslee."
Broader Implications for the West Midlands
This approval is part of a broader effort to enhance housing infrastructure in the West Midlands, aligning with regional goals for urban expansion and sustainable development. The inclusion of affordable units highlights a focus on social equity, ensuring that diverse demographic groups can benefit from new housing opportunities.
The Priorslee East Strategic Urban Extension is a long-term plan that will significantly transform the local landscape, providing not only homes but also potential boosts to local economies and community services. As construction progresses, stakeholders will monitor its impact on traffic, environment, and resident well-being.
