DVLA Rule: Drivers Over 70 Risk Being Banned from Driving
DVLA Rule: Drivers Over 70 Risk Driving Ban

Motorists aged 70 and over risk being unable to drive if they fail to renew their driving licence under DVLA rules. The requirement applies after their 70th birthday, with licences needing renewal every three years thereafter.

DVLA Sends Renewal Forms Automatically

The DVLA automatically sends a D46P application form to drivers 90 days before their 70th birthday. This form allows them to renew their licence. According to Age UK, a leading charity for older people, drivers must apply for any extra vehicle categories covered on their old licence if they wish to continue driving them. The charity states: "Don't forget to apply for any extra categories of vehicle covered on your old licence if you still want to be able to drive them. There might be extra costs for these but if you don't apply for these extra categories you'll only be able to drive a car in future."

Consequences of Not Renewing

If a licence expires and the driver does not apply for a new one, Age UK warns: "You won't legally be allowed to drive." The DVLA sends a confirmation email once an application is submitted. Drivers can continue driving while their licence is being renewed if they have medical support from their doctor, had a valid licence previously, and only drive under the conditions of the old licence. Additionally, the application must be less than a year old, the last licence must not have been revoked or refused for medical reasons, and the driver must not be disqualified.

How to Apply by Post or Online

Drivers can apply by post using the D46P form, which the DVLA sends automatically. If they do not have this form, they can use the D1 application form, available at most Post Offices. The DVLA states: "Your driving licence should arrive in 3 weeks. It might take longer if your medical or personal details need to be checked." Age UK adds: "It can take up to 3 weeks to renew your licence if you apply by post, so you might prefer to renew online instead. Register on GOV.UK and follow step-by-step instructions on how to renew. Your new licence should arrive within a week."
