UK Foreign Office Updates Travel Advice for 7 Countries, Some Now No-Go Zones
FCDO Updates Travel Advice for 7 Countries

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel advice for seven countries, including several popular holiday destinations in Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa. The updates range from warnings about security risks to outright advice against travel to certain regions.

Austria

Eurovision 2026 is set to take place in Vienna from 10 May to 17 May. The FCDO advises attendees to sign up for email updates on travel advice for Austria, download the official Eurovision app, and check the official Eurovision and Vienna Tourism Board websites for the latest information. Security checks will be in place at the Wiener Stadthalle venue, with a strict bag ban allowing only small personal items like wallets, mobile phones, or keys. Similar restrictions may apply at official fan zones, including the Eurovision Village. Travelers are urged to keep valuables safe and refer to the ticket FAQs on the Eurovision website for further details.

Mexico

On 27 April, arson attacks and roadblocks were reported in northern Nayarit following a Mexican government operation against organized crime groups. Some municipalities, such as Tecuala and Acaponeta, have issued shelter-in-place orders. The FCDO advises those in the area to monitor local media and follow instructions from local authorities.

Japan

The FCDO has updated its advice regarding drink spiking and credit card fraud. There have been increased reports of victims having their drinks spiked and waking up with no memory, only to discover large unauthorized transactions on their credit cards, ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of pounds. Risks are higher in entertainment and nightlife districts across Japan.

Kuwait

Kuwait airspace has reopened, and some flights have resumed from Kuwait International Airport, though only to a limited range of destinations. The FCDO advises travelers to follow local authority and airline instructions and only travel to the airport if they deem it safe.

Chad

Planned protests are expected on 2 May in N’Djamena. The FCDO advises against all travel to parts of Chad due to the political situation and potential unrest.

Colombia

Between 24 and 27 April, several explosive devices were detonated in Cauca, Valle de Cauca, and Nariño departments, including near military bases and police stations. One explosion on the Pan-American Highway caused multiple deaths, injuries, and significant damage. Road closures and further disruption are expected. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to these regions.

Burundi

The only international airport in Burundi is Melchior Ndadaye International Airport. If flights are unavailable, land border options are limited: the DRC border area is unstable, the Rwandan border is closed, and the Tanzania-Burundi border, while operational, may have limited transport due to ongoing fuel shortages. The FCDO advises against all travel to parts of Burundi.

The FCDO emphasizes that travelers should research their destinations thoroughly and obtain appropriate travel insurance that covers their itinerary, planned activities, and emergency expenses.
