Five New Flats Proposed for Garden of Historic Brownhills Chapel
Five Flats Planned for Brownhills Chapel Garden

A planning application has been submitted that could see five new flats built in the garden of a historic chapel and schoolhouse in Brownhills, Walsall.

Details of the Coppice Lane Development Plan

The proposal, submitted to Walsall Council by applicant Azid Gungah, concerns a green space adjacent to United House on Coppice Lane. The plan is to construct a three-storey building containing five flats, alongside parking, a bin store, and bicycle storage facilities.

The layout proposes two single-bedroom flats on both the ground and first floors, with a single flat on the third floor. Future tenants would have access to a communal garden space.

Respecting Local Heritage and Environment

The site for the proposed block is currently an open plot with low vegetation and trees. Crucially, the development plot sits next to United House, a Locally Listed building recognised for its architectural and historic importance, dating from the late 19th to early-20th century.

In his application, Mr Gungah states the new property has been carefully designed to be ‘subservient’ to United House, ensuring it does not obscure the historic building. He emphasised the design aims to balance the need for new housing with protecting the historic environment.

Access and Sustainable Features

Vehicle access to the development is proposed via the existing service road off Chester Road North. The plans include five parking bays, with four of these equipped for EV charging, highlighting a focus on sustainable transport.

Mr Gungah said: “The scheme has been carefully designed to respect the setting of United House, mitigate its environmental impacts, and overcome technical site constraints. It represents a sustainable, high-quality, and policy-compliant development that will make a positive contribution to the character of Brownhills.”

The application, submitted in January 2026, now awaits a decision from Walsall Council's planning department.
