Sir John Robins QPM DL, the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, has been awarded a knighthood in recognition of his distinguished services to policing. The honour celebrates a career spanning over three decades, all served within the same force.
A Lifelong Vocation in Policing
Sir John began his journey in law enforcement as a constable in 1990. His commitment and leadership saw him rise through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as Chief Constable in 2019. He is now one of the longest-serving chief constables in the United Kingdom.
On receiving the knighthood, Sir John expressed profound humility. "I am truly humbled by this honour," he said. "Like many colleagues, I chose to dedicate my whole working life to policing. For me, policing is a vocation; to receive a knighthood for doing a job that I feel so strongly about means so much."
Leading Major Regional and National Units
Beyond leading the fourth biggest police force in the country, Sir John's responsibilities are extensive. He also commands one of the largest counter-terrorism units outside London: Counter Terrorism Policing North East (CTPNE).
His portfolio includes oversight of the region’s Scientific Support Services (RSSS) and the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit (YHROCU). On a national level, he leads the National Police Air Service (NPAS), which provides crucial aviation support across England and Wales.
Gratitude and a Focus on Community
Sir John dedicated the honour to his colleagues, family, and the communities he serves. "I have focused my whole career on reducing crime, protecting the vulnerable and reassuring the public that we are here for them," he stated.
He paid tribute to the daily efforts of police officers, staff, and volunteers across the county and country. He also expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support of his wife and family over many decades.
"Uniquely, I have spent my whole career in West Yorkshire Police, it is a part of me," Sir John reflected. "The officers, staff and volunteers who I work alongside are outstanding. I look forward to working with them for many years to come, as we continue to serve the communities of West Yorkshire together."
