Striking Visuals Reveal Proposed Wythenshawe Food Hall Design
Detailed computer-generated images have been released, showcasing the ambitious design for a new food hall planned at Wythenshawe Civic Centre. The proposal, submitted by developer Muse in partnership with Manchester City Council, aims to transform the area with a vibrant market space.
Location and Design Features
The food hall is slated for construction on the corner of Hale Top and The Birtles, adjacent to the former Peacocks store. The project involves merging three currently vacant retail units into a single, expansive venue. Architectural firm IF DO has crafted a modern facade featuring trendy matchstick ceramic tiling and a distinctive wrap-around canopy to shelter outdoor diners.
Joel Chandler, senior development manager at Muse, expressed enthusiasm for the project's progress. "The food hall will be a hive for a range of local outlets and will provide new spaces for the community to spend time in and give the town's night-time economy a major boost," he stated. "We're already talking with potential vendors about taking space in the food hall following some great conversations with the local community about what types of cuisine they would like to see."
Part of a Broader Regeneration Initiative
This food hall is a key component of a comprehensive plan to revitalize Wythenshawe Civic Centre, which the council purchased from property owners St Modwen in 2022. The overall scheme has secured significant funding, including £20 million from the government and an additional £11.9 million from the town hall.
Other elements of the regeneration include:
- A new 'culture hub' currently under construction nearby.
- Enhancements to public spaces, expected to be completed by 2027.
Council leader Bev Craig emphasized that these efforts directly address community feedback. "Wythenshawe residents asked for more things to do, opportunities to spend time in Civic and night time attractions that give the area a lift and attract visitors," she explained.
Current Status and Public Involvement
The planning application, which focuses on external alterations to the building, is now open for public consultation. This allows residents and stakeholders to review the proposals and provide input before a final decision is made. The council and developer are moving forward with the project at a rapid pace, aiming to create a bustling destination that supports local businesses and enriches community life.
