Leicestershire Family to Climb Snowdon in Memory of Fallen Soldier Cousin

A devoted Leicestershire family is preparing for an emotional and physically demanding hike up Yr Wydffa, also known as Snowdon, this month. They are undertaking this challenge in loving memory of their cousin, Major Russell Gallacher, who tragically passed away suddenly in August of last year while at work, at the age of just 48.

A Distinguished Military Career Cut Short

Russell Gallacher, originally from Leicestershire, began his remarkable military journey in 1994 when he joined the 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards at only 17 years old. Over an illustrious 30-year career, he became widely respected for his exceptional leadership qualities, profound humility, and unwavering commitment to supporting others. His dedication saw him rise to the rank of Major in 2015. He later transferred to The Royal Yeomanry, where he played a pivotal role in training and mentoring younger recruits, leaving a lasting legacy of guidance and inspiration.

A Heartfelt Tribute from the Younger Generation

Earlier this year, Darcey Connor, aged 14, and her brother Harry, aged 11, approached their parents, Dan and Sally, with a heartfelt idea. They expressed a strong desire to do something meaningful and significant to honor their cousin Russell's memory. This initiative has now blossomed into a full family endeavor. The Connor family of four, joined by Russell's younger brother Luke, will embark on a challenging 20-kilometer trek to the 1,085-meter summit of Yr Wydffa on Friday, April 10. They will be accompanied by their loyal cocker spaniel, Benji, making the tribute a complete family affair.

Darcey shared her mixed feelings about the upcoming challenge, stating: “I’m excited and nervous for the challenge, but it’s a great cause so I will do my best. I really hope I can get to the top and not be out of puff, this will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

Fundraising for a Vital Veterans' Charity

Beyond the personal tribute, the family has set an ambitious goal to raise crucial funds for the esteemed veterans' charity, Help for Heroes. Darcey and Harry have already launched their fundraising efforts with great enthusiasm, organizing a successful cake sale and rallying substantial support from friends and family. Their father, Dan, reported that the response has been overwhelmingly positive and encouraging.

Dan Connor explained the family's motivation: “Darcey and Harry really sparked the idea for something we could all prepare for. None of us have done anything like this before but we’re up for the challenge and proud to be supporting Help for Heroes. Russ was someone who always looked out for others. It feels like a fitting way to recognise his service and the impact he had on so many people.”
