Kent Farm Owner, 75, to Row English Channel Overnight for Nature Charity
Martin Richmond-Coggan, a 75-year-old farm owner from Kent, is gearing up for an overnight row across the English Channel this April. This demanding endurance challenge aims to raise funds for a charity that supports wellbeing through nature.
Channel Crossing Details
Martin, co-founder of Green Farm in Shadoxhurst, will join a crew of past and present rowers from Oriel College, Oxford. They will set off around midnight on April 10 from Ramsgate, heading towards the coast near Dunkirk. The team will cover approximately 32 nautical miles in a traditional six-oared Cornish Gig.
Part of College Celebrations
The challenge is part of Oriel College's 700th anniversary celebrations, which will feature eight crews undertaking Channel crossings over five weekends. Martin, who captained Oriel's 1st VIII in 1969-70, will be the oldest participant, with rowers aged between 20 and 75 taking part.
Fundraising for the Pearce Coggan Foundation
Martin is undertaking this effort to raise funds for the Pearce Coggan Foundation, a charity based at Green Farm. This organization supports individuals, families, and communities through access to nature, wellbeing programmes, and outdoor experiences.
Speaking ahead of the challenge, Martin said: "This is a real test of endurance, teamwork and spirit, but it's also an opportunity to support something that means a great deal to me. The work of the Pearce Coggan Foundation shows just how powerful nature can be in supporting wellbeing, and I'm proud to be taking on this challenge to help raise awareness and funds."
Green Farm and Farm Stay UK
While Green Farm is known for its rural accommodation and retreats, it is also part of the Farm Stay UK network. This represents independently run farm stays across the country that offer visitors a chance to relax, return to nature, and support British farmers.
David Brown, owner of Farm Stay UK, added: "Stories like Martin's really highlight the passion and purpose behind many of our members. Working farms are often at the heart of their communities, and it's fantastic to see that connection being used to support such an important cause."
Supporting the Cause
Donations raised through the challenge will go directly towards supporting the ongoing work of the Pearce Coggan Foundation. For more information or to contribute, individuals can visit the JustGiving page.
