Rossendale Ramblers Navigate Weather Extremes on Recent Outings
It has been a week of contrasting conditions for the Rossendale Ramblers, as members experienced both sunshine and storms during their latest walking adventures. On Wednesday, despite forecasts predicting hail, sleet, and rain, a determined group of 26 ramblers gathered at Whalley for a challenging 10-mile trek. To their delight, the weather turned out to be largely dry, with occasional sunny intervals that allowed the walkers to fully appreciate the historic Whalley Abbey and the stunning views over the Grade II listed railway viaduct.
Sunday Walk Proves More Challenging with Wet and Windy Conditions
In stark contrast, Sunday presented a much tougher challenge for 11 hardy ramblers who embarked on a six-mile walk from Abbey Village. The group faced relentless rain and strong winds as they traversed soggy moorland paths, visited Tockholes, and explored a section of the Witton Weavers’ Way. However, the walk was not without its highlights; newly born lambs wearing tiny raincoats provided moments of joy and elicited cheerful reactions from the participants, adding a touch of warmth to the otherwise damp excursion.
Upcoming Social Walks and Scenic Routes Announced
Looking ahead, the Rossendale Ramblers have scheduled several engaging events for early April. On Saturday, April 4, the group will host one of their popular and highly sociable two-hour pub walks, starting from Summerseat. This walk will offer a comprehensive circuit of the local area, including highlights such as Holcombe Brook, Redisher Woods, and Greenmount Golf Course. Participants can look forward to optional refreshments and lunch at the pub afterward, making it a perfect blend of exercise and camaraderie.
The following day, on Sunday, April 5, the ramblers will head to Great Harwood for a six-mile walk that promises scenic views of Whalley Nab. The route will follow the Hyndburn Clog Trail to Dean Clough Reservoir and is scheduled to finish by 2pm, allowing ample time for family commitments. The group encourages both new and experienced walkers to join in for this picturesque outing.
On Wednesday, April 8, another opportunity awaits with a 10-mile walk starting in Worsthorne. This route will trace the Burnley Way and continue along the Pennine Bridleway to Widdop. On a clear day, the views from this path are described as absolutely splendid, offering a rewarding experience for all who participate.
