Royal Python 'Rebel' Awaits Home for Four Years

Rebel, a royal python, has been waiting for a forever home for over four years at the RSPCA Birmingham Animal Centre in the West Midlands. The snake, now fully grown, arrived at the centre in 2019 as a juvenile and has seen many other animals come and go while still awaiting adoption.

The Longest Resident

According to the RSPCA, Rebel is one of the longest-staying residents at the centre. Staff describe him as a 'gentle giant' who is calm and easy to handle. However, his size and specific care requirements have made it difficult to find a suitable owner.

Centre manager Sarah Smith said: 'Rebel is a wonderful snake with a great temperament, but people often underestimate the commitment needed for a pet like him. He needs a spacious enclosure, controlled temperatures, and a diet of frozen thawed rodents.'

Exotic Pet Challenges

The RSPCA reports an increase in abandoned exotic pets, including snakes, lizards, and turtles. Many owners fail to research the animals' needs before purchasing them. Rebel's case highlights the importance of understanding the long-term responsibility of owning an exotic pet.

Rebel requires a vivarium at least 4 feet long, with a heat source and UV lighting. He eats once a week and can live for up to 30 years. The RSPCA is looking for an experienced owner who can provide the necessary care.

How to Help

Interested adopters can contact the RSPCA Birmingham Animal Centre for more information. The centre also welcomes donations to support the care of animals like Rebel.
