Student Nurse Emma White Takes on London Marathon for Shelter Charity
Emma White, a dedicated student nurse and mother of two from Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, is gearing up for the challenge of a lifetime as she prepares to run the TCS London Marathon on Sunday, April 26. In her third year of studying for a Bachelor of Nursing with Honours at the University of Chester, Emma aims to raise thousands of pounds for Shelter, a homelessness charity that supports families in need.
From Novice Runner to Marathon Participant
Emma only began running in April 2024, but she quickly embraced the sport by setting a personal goal to complete a race every month last year. Through these efforts, she has already raised funds for various good causes, including the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. Now, she is ready to tackle her most significant challenge yet, joining tens of thousands of other runners along the 26.2-mile route through the capital.
A Personal Connection to the Cause
Emma’s motivation stems from her professional and personal experiences. As a student nurse and a mother, she understands the vital importance of stability and safe housing for health and wellbeing. She has pledged to raise £2,250 for Shelter, emphasizing that every donation, share, and word of encouragement means the world to her.
In a heartfelt statement, Emma said, “I am proud to be a council estate girl who grew up in the social housing system, so I know only too well how important a charity like Shelter is and how important the work they do is for families just like mine. I know how lucky I am to be able to tuck my girls into their beds at night, safe and sound. So many do not have that privilege.”
She added, “Statistics show that full-time workers who live in rented accommodation are potentially just one pay day away from homelessness. The London Marathon is a huge challenge, but so is the fight against the housing emergency. A home means everything to me, so I'm joining the fight for home by fundraising for Shelter.”
Support from the University Community
Mike Bellis, Head of Nursing and Healthcare at the University of Chester, expressed pride in Emma’s efforts. He stated, “The Division of Nursing and Healthcare at Chester are proud to support Emma in this worthwhile event, and wish Emma the very best in her challenge to complete the London Marathon, and raise much-needed support for this worthwhile charity.”
Emma also shared a message of gratitude and inspiration, saying, “Thank you so much for your support as I take on 26.2 miles – for Shelter, for families in need, and to show my daughters that with determination and heart, anything is possible.”
This event not only highlights Emma’s personal dedication but also underscores the broader issues of homelessness and housing insecurity, bringing attention to the critical work of charities like Shelter in supporting vulnerable families across the UK.
