A couple residing in Tunbridge Wells is joyously celebrating their platinum wedding anniversary, marking an incredible 70 years of marriage. William and Barbara Apted first crossed paths while employed at a bank on Lombard Street in London. William had commenced his role there before temporarily leaving to fulfill his National Service obligations.
Upon his return to the bank, he discovered that Barbara had joined the staff. Capturing her attention, William humorously remarked, "She saw me handling all that cash." Their romance blossomed when Barbara was just 16 years old; they became engaged when she turned 17 and married at 19, with William being five years her senior.
Defying Bank Rules and Building a Life Together
They fell in love despite the bank's strict policies against workplace relationships. Initially, William showed little interest in conversing with girls, but Barbara cleverly found excuses to chat with him at the cash desk. Their wedding day was notably frigid, with snow covering the ground and no heating in the church, making it difficult to discern if their shivers were due to nerves or the cold.

A standout moment was receiving a personal letter from King Charles III, who noted they are 'one in a million' to reach 70 years of marriage. This followed a card from Queen Elizabeth for their diamond anniversary a decade earlier. Adding a touch of humour to the special day, William accidentally poked Barbara's eye with his finger while cutting the cake, sparking laughter from all attendees.
