Free Irish Dancing for Over-55s in Manchester Kicks Off 2026 Get Moving Week
Free Irish Dance Class for Over-55s in Manchester

Manchester residents aged 55 and over are being invited to step into the new year with a lively and free Irish dancing session. The event aims to provide a fun, social way to boost physical activity and wellbeing in 2026.

A Fun Start to a Healthier Year

The special afternoon will take place on Tuesday, January 20, from 2pm to 4pm at the Irish World Heritage Centre on 1 Irish Town Way, Cheetham Hill, Manchester M8 0AE. It is designed to be a welcoming, inclusive event where complete beginners can feel just as comfortable as those with more experience.

Leading the session will be local instructor Christine Matthewson from The Claddagh Association of Adult Irish Dance. She will guide participants through some basic steps and a fun routine set to uplifting music. The organisers will also provide light refreshments, including tea, coffee, and biscuits.

Part of a Wider Health Initiative

This event is a key part of the Get Moving campaign, run in partnership with Yakult and First Time for Everything. First Time for Everything is a community health and wellbeing initiative created by the Royal Voluntary Service. Its goal is to offer people, particularly older or less mobile individuals, the chance to try new activities for free in their local area.

Reshma Patel, marketing manager at Yakult UK and Ireland, emphasised the campaign's purpose: "Being active has such a positive impact on our wellbeing, with even small increases in physical activity benefitting our health. Together, we’re helping people discover enjoyable ways to be active, connect with others in their local community, and support their overall health and wellbeing."

How to Join and Online Alternatives

Spaces for the in-person dance session are limited, so booking is essential. To register or get more information, contact local Royal Voluntary Service activity coordinator Karen Kennedy via email at karen.kennedy@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or by calling 07795 450563.

For those who cannot attend in person, the Get Moving campaign extends into the digital realm. The week will feature a wide range of short, 10-minute exercise and dance sessions suitable for all fitness levels. It is completely free to join with no sign-up required; simply search for @VirtualVillageHall on social media to take part.
