Hundreds of thousands of older people across the UK are missing out on a significant annual saving by not claiming a free TV Licence, new analysis reveals.
The Hidden Benefit for Over-75s
While the universal free TV Licence for those aged 75 and over was scrapped in 2020, a crucial exemption remains. Pensioners who receive Pension Credit are still entitled to a licence at no cost. However, with Pension Credit itself being massively underclaimed, an estimated 470,000 eligible people over the age of 75 are thought to be paying the fee unnecessarily.
The standard colour TV Licence is set to rise to over £180 this year, representing a substantial outgoing for those on a fixed income. This cost could be completely waived for those who qualify.
Pension Credit: The Gateway to Extra Support
Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit designed to top up the weekly income of people over the state pension age. According to Money Saving Expert, around 2.2 million people are eligible for Pension Credit, but an estimated 760,000 do not claim it.
Many pensioners avoid applying because they believe the amount will be too small to make a difference, or they fear a complicated application process. Experts stress that this is a critical mistake. Even a small award of Pension Credit acts as a 'passport' to other vital support, including the free TV Licence, help with council tax, and potentially other benefits.
"About 2.2 million are eligible for Pension Credit, but it's estimated that around 760,000 don't claim – in many cases because they don't realise they could be entitled to it," a spokesperson for Money Saving Expert stated.
How to Claim Your Free Licence
It is vital to understand that the free TV Licence does not happen automatically. The process involves two key steps. First, eligible individuals must successfully apply for Pension Credit through the Department for Work and Pensions. Once awarded, they can then apply for the free TV Licence directly from TV Licensing.
The message from charities and money advice services is clear: if you or someone you know is over the state pension age and on a low income, checking eligibility for Pension Credit is essential. The potential reward is not just a small income boost, but also the elimination of a major annual bill, providing greater financial security and peace of mind.
