Ricky Hatton's Heartbroken Daughters 'Still Sleep in Boxer's Clothes'

An inquest into the death of former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton has revealed that his devastated daughters continue to sleep in his clothes as they grieve his tragic passing. The emotional testimony was heard at Stockport Coroner's Court on Friday, March 20, 2026, shedding light on the profound impact of his loss on his family.

Family's Heartbreaking Testimony

Jennifer Dooley, the mother of Hatton's daughters Millie, 13, and Fearne, 12, and his partner for 11 years until 2016, provided poignant evidence during the proceedings. She described Hatton as a very hands-on and doting father who remained actively involved in his children's lives even after their separation. Ms. Dooley emphasized that Hatton often expressed that the time spent with his daughters was when he felt happiest.

The inquest heard that Hatton's children have been deeply affected by his death, with the girls reportedly still sleeping in his T-shirts and spraying his aftershave to feel closer to him. Ms. Dooley added, "They miss their dad deeply. They are heartbroken. His loss has left a significant and lasting hole in our family."

Circumstances of Hatton's Death

Ricky Hatton, aged 46, was found unresponsive in the upstairs games room at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on Sunday, September 14, last year. The official cause of death was determined to be hanging. Prior to his death, Hatton had taken his daughters and granddaughter out for a meal at a pub on the evening of Friday, September 12. He appeared normal and informed them he would see them in a couple of days following a trip to Dubai, where he was scheduled to participate in an exhibition boxing match.

However, Hatton failed to attend an engagement on Saturday, September 13. His manager, Paul Speak, went to his home at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 14, to take him to the airport for the flight to Dubai, only to discover Hatton's body.

Coroner's Verdict and Findings

Alison Mutch, the senior coroner for South Manchester, presided over the inquest. She noted that no suicide notes were found, and police investigations uncovered no information suggesting Hatton was planning to take his own life. The coroner highlighted that Hatton had made significant future plans, which included the upcoming exhibition match in Dubai.

In her conclusion, Ms. Mutch stated, "I have listened very carefully to all the evidence. When I add everything together, I cannot be satisfied he intended to take his own life. Therefore, it is not possible in law for me to conclude suicide. I have concluded a narrative verdict." She further explained that Hatton's intention remains unclear due to his being under the influence of alcohol at the time, and a neuropathological post-mortem examination revealed evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

The inquest painted a picture of a beloved father and former champion who was in good spirits and looking forward to the future, leaving many questions unanswered about the tragic events that led to his untimely death.
