A 23-year-old woman wanted by Lithuanian authorities for serious child sex offences has been arrested after being discovered hiding in a wardrobe in the United Kingdom. Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s International Policing Unit forced entry into a rural property in Coalisland, County Tyrone, where the suspect was found concealed inside a bedroom cupboard. She was detained under a Lithuanian extradition warrant.
Details of the Case
The woman is wanted by authorities in Lithuania to serve a prison sentence for sexual offences against a child in the Mazeikiai region. She is expected to appear before Laganside Extradition Court on Thursday, June 4, according to the Mirror.
Police Statement
Sergeant Davey from the PSNI’s International Policing Unit stated: “Despite this fugitive’s best efforts to hide and avoid the consequences of her actions she was today apprehended. Today’s arrest delivers on our assurance of the relentless pursuit of perpetrators and supporting victims.” He described the case as “another example” of the PSNI “working to locate, arrest and bring before the courts those who are wanted for serious offences in Europe.”
Superintendent Marty Reid, also from the unit, said the PSNI are “committed to tracking down fugitives and supporting our European law enforcement partners.” He added that the force is “increasingly engaged with the UK Joint International Crime Centre along with partners in Interpol and Europol to collectively deliver justice for both victims here in Northern Ireland and abroad.”
The arrest highlights ongoing international cooperation in pursuing individuals wanted for serious crimes across borders.
