Burbage Sailing Coach Colin Magee Awarded MBE for 60 Years of Volunteer Service
Burbage Sailing Coach Colin Magee Awarded MBE

Colin Magee, a dedicated sailing coach hailing from Burbage in Leicestershire, has been honoured with an MBE in a ceremony at Windsor Castle, presided over by Princess Anne earlier this month. This prestigious award celebrates Colin's remarkable and unwavering commitment to volunteering, which spans an impressive nearly six decades of service focused on children and individuals with disabilities.

A Legacy of Inclusivity and Opportunity

In 1967, Colin played a pivotal role in co-founding the Leicestershire Youth Sailing Association, an initiative born out of a desire to provide sailing opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds who were unable to afford membership at private clubs. What began as a modest endeavour has since flourished into a thriving organisation that welcomes a diverse range of participants.

Expanding Horizons for All

Over the years, the association has broadened its reach to include not only children but also adults with disabilities, students facing learning difficulties, cadet groups, and various schools. This expansion underscores Colin's dedication to making sailing accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances or abilities.

Thriving Across Leicestershire Locations

Colin has tirelessly managed the charity from multiple locations across Leicestershire, including Hinckley Wharf, Bosworth Waterpark, and John Merrick's Lake in Watermead Country Park, where it continues to operate successfully today. His efforts have positively impacted thousands of young people, many of whom have gone on to forge successful careers in the Royal Navy, the Merchant Navy, or by establishing and managing their own sailing centres.

A Humble Recognition of Collective Effort

Upon receiving the award, Colin expressed that it is a 'great honour' and emphasised that it is not just for him, but also for all the hard-working volunteers who contribute to the ongoing success of the Leicestershire Youth Sailing Association. Their collective dedication ensures that the organisation remains a vital resource for the community.

Opportunities to Get Involved

For those interested in learning to sail or qualifying as a powerboat driver, the association offers courses that can be booked by contacting Jill Magee via telephone at 01455 619347 or by email at jill@lrysa.org.uk. This provides a wonderful chance for individuals to engage with the sport and benefit from the legacy that Colin has helped build.
