One of Yorkshire's most significant heritage sites is calling for a new wave of volunteers to revive a key historic role. After a decade-long absence, the position of Fountains Hall Room Guide is returning to the Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal estate, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Ripon.
A Rare Opportunity to Bring History to Life
The National Trust has launched a fresh recruitment drive to find enthusiastic individuals for this prestigious role. The aim is to bring the atmospheric Fountains Hall back to life for the thousands of visitors who explore the site each year. While the medieval Abbey ruins draw global fame, Fountains Hall itself provides the crucial historical link between the monastic period and the stunning 18th-century Water Garden landscape.
New volunteers will be entrusted with sharing the building's hidden corners and the fascinating stories of its former residents. Rebecca Allott, the volunteering coordinator, emphasises that passion is more important than prior knowledge. "This is a rare opportunity for people who love history or simply connecting with others," she says. Full training will be provided, and the Trust is offering flexible time commitments to suit a variety of schedules.
Beyond the Hall: A Variety of Roles Available
The volunteer recruitment extends beyond the Hall itself. The sprawling estate is also looking to fill several other positions to support its operations and enhance the visitor experience. These roles include helping with event preparation for major site activities and providing general visitor assistance across the grounds.
The National Trust promises a rewarding community environment for all volunteers and confirms that they 'won't be left out of pocket' for their travel expenses. For those living closer to other Trust properties, additional opportunities are available nearby.
Other Local Volunteer Vacancies
Beningbrough Hall is seeking House Experience volunteers to share tales of its art and architecture, as well as Food & Beverage Hosts to support the restaurant team. In the heart of York City Centre, Treasurer’s House is recruiting guides to lead tours through its famous collection and historic rooms.
