Young people across Rushcliffe are set to benefit from professionally led football sessions designed to build confidence and develop crucial life skills, thanks to a new council grant.
Funding for Future Generations
Rushcliffe Borough Council has awarded £5,000 from its community wellbeing fund to support the delivery of free football sessions through the established Premier League Kicks programme. This initiative specifically targets children and young people aged 8 to 16, engaging them in positive, healthy activities.
The grant has been allocated to Nottingham Forest Community Trust, which runs the local Premier League Kicks scheme. The programme uses football as a tool to promote physical activity, teamwork, and personal development within a safe and supportive environment.
More Than Just a Game
Delivered by trained coaches and youth workers, these sessions extend far beyond basic football skills. They place a significant emphasis on building confidence, self-esteem, and social skills among participants.
Complementary workshops address key issues affecting young people today, helping them to develop more positive behaviours and resilience. This holistic approach ensures that the benefits of the programme have a lasting impact off the pitch.
Community Commitment in Action
The funding decision reflects RBC's ongoing commitment to youth development, community safety, and promoting healthier lifestyles across the Borough. The programme's impact was recently observed firsthand by Councillor Jonathan Wheeler, RBC's cabinet portfolio holder for leisure and wellbeing.
He attended a session at The South Wolds Academy and Sixth Form in Keyworth, stating: "This is a fantastic initiative giving boys and girls from ages 8 to 16 the opportunity to play football and take part in other multi-sport activities. It connects sports with education, training and employment."
Cllr Wheeler emphasised the vital importance of such programmes, adding: "It's vital for children and young people to learn new skills, enjoy being part of a team and experience the benefits of playing sport."
Calum Osborne, chief executive officer at Nottingham Forest Community Trust, welcomed the additional support: "This funding will help us reach even more young people through Premier League Kicks and give them a safe place to play, grow, and connect with positive role models. These sessions make a real difference to confidence, wellbeing, and aspiration."
