Clayton-le-Moors Scouts Expand with New Explorer Unit for Teenagers
The 1st Clayton-le-Moors Scout Group is broadening its reach by launching a dedicated Explorer Scout Unit tailored for young people aged 14 to 17. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between school and adulthood, offering a dynamic blend of adventure and personal growth opportunities.
Building Life Skills Through Scouting
Being an Explorer Scout goes beyond outdoor activities; it focuses on equipping members with essential life tools. Participants can develop independence, leadership, problem-solving abilities, and responsibility—qualities highly valued in today's professional landscape.
Volunteer David emphasized the long-term advantages of involvement, stating, "Young people can learn and develop skills, and these will help with applications for apprenticeships, college, employment, and university." A recent report by Stephanie Simmons supports this view, highlighting twelve key reasons why Scouting fosters development, such as boosting self-esteem, enhancing social skills, and promoting outdoor expertise.
Adventure and Activities on Offer
The 1st Clayton-le-Moors Explorer Scout Unit, located on Winckley Road in Accrington, currently has openings for new members. Nationally, Scouting provides access to over 250 activities, and the local unit features a packed programme including:
- Adventure: Bouldering, scuba diving, caving, and camping.
- Skills: First aid, navigation, cooking, and pioneering.
- Social: Board game nights, ten-pin bowling, and hiking.
Volunteer Opportunities for Adults
It's not just teenagers who can benefit—the group is also recruiting adult volunteers to support its various sections, which cater to all age groups:
- Squirrels (ages four to six)
- Beavers (ages six to eight)
- Cubs (ages 8 to 10)
- Scouts (ages 10 to 14)
- Explorers (ages 14 to 17)
David noted that there are numerous 'behind the scenes' roles available for those with limited time, such as fundraising, administration, IT support, or serving as a trustee. "If you just want to help when needed, we can find you a role," he added.
