Young Sailors Embark on Marathon Charity Challenge
Dedicated young sailors from the Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Sailing Association (LRYSA) have successfully raised thousands of pounds for their charity through an impressive day-long sailing marathon. The event, which took place on October 11, saw participants on the water from first light at 7:20am until dusk, demonstrating incredible commitment to their cause.
A Community Effort for a Vital Cause
The sponsored sail was the brainchild of 13-year-old Clara Byford, who recognised the need to raise funds for essential repairs to the charity's equipment. Clara was the first on the water, followed closely by 14-year-old Thomas Dale, both members of the Leicestershire youth racing team. The charity's chairman, Colin Magee, provided safety cover from a power boat, remaining on the water throughout the entire day to support the young participants.
The event was a true community endeavour, involving not just the young sailors but also their instructors, volunteers, parents, and even senior citizens from the LRYSA's senior sailing group. In a powerful display of the club's inclusive ethos, a disabled young girl from Ashfield Academy, who learned to sail with the LRYSA during the summer, also took part to show her support.
Supporting Inclusive Sailing for Over Five Decades
Founded in 1967, the LRYSA has always focused on providing opportunities for the disadvantaged and disabled. Based at John Merrick’s Lake in Watermead Country Park near Syston, the charity provides all necessary boats and equipment, including special access boats for teaching disabled individuals of all ages.
Colin Magee extended a significant thank you to the parents committee for their extensive organising and planning, singling out Katharine Dale for her tireless work in making the event a reality. The funds raised will be crucial for maintaining and repairing the association's equipment and power boats, ensuring safety standards are met ahead of the winter season.
