Twycross Zoo has been transformed into a spectacular after-dark wonderland with its Lanterns of the Wild event, a breathtaking light trail that is captivating visitors of all ages.
A Journey Through Illuminated Worlds
The immersive experience, which launched in November 2025, will continue to shine until 22 February 2026, ensuring it is open for the February half-term holidays. Spanning more than a mile, the trail at the Atherstone-based zoo features an astonishing over 2,000 individual lanterns. Guests are invited to wander through 10 distinct immersive zones, journeying from vibrant habitats and icy tundras to lush rainforests and the depths of the ocean, all populated by life-size lantern animals and epic-scale displays.
The carefully crafted sections include North American Wilds, Desert Sands, Tropical Reef, African Savannah, Polar Realms, Amazonian Jungle, and African Forests. One of the most talked-about installations is a massive Mount Rushmore replica, a structure measuring 25 metres long and eight metres tall, which was assembled in six separate parts.
Artistry and The Gruffalo on Display
The scale of the production is monumental. According to the zoo, the entire spectacle took over 99,000 hours to build. A dedicated team of more than 30 Chinese artisans was responsible for bringing the vision to life, utilising a staggering 25,000 bulbs and 70,000 metres of strip lighting.
For younger visitors, a major highlight is the chance to encounter The Gruffalo and the 'big bad mouse' in a dazzling lantern form. This is believed to be the world's first Gruffalo lantern experience, adding a beloved literary dimension to the sensory feast.

With the event running throughout the winter months, it offers a unique and magical evening out for families and groups.
