Outlander Star Tobias Menzies Joins Apple TV's High-Stakes CIA Thriller Safe Houses
Tobias Menzies, celebrated for his dual roles as Frank and Black Jack Randall in the hit series Outlander, has officially joined the cast of Apple TV's upcoming espionage thriller Safe Houses. The actor will star alongside Hollywood icons Jennifer Connelly and Ana de Armas in this highly anticipated eight-episode series.
Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
The series, adapted from Dan Fesperman's 2018 novel, features a compelling narrative set in the aftermath of a senior CIA officer's murder in Madrid. Menzies will portray Clarke Winters, the husband of Ambassador Elizabeth Winters, played by Jennifer Connelly. Ana de Armas takes on the role of Sofia Jiménez, a fugitive agent accused of the crime.
David Lyons, known for The Beast in Me, has also been confirmed as a new addition to the cast, playing Kevin Garvey, a special ops CIA agent. The creative team is led by screenwriter Gideon Raff, who serves as showrunner, executive producer, and will direct several episodes. Otto Bathurst, the director behind Peaky Blinders, is set to helm the opening installments, promising a gripping visual style.
Plot and Source Material
Safe Houses follows two parallel investigations into the murder, with Sofia Jiménez and Elizabeth Winters unraveling a vast conspiracy that threatens global power dynamics. The series is based on Fesperman's novel, which has received critical acclaim for its masterful storytelling and has been compared to the works of espionage legend John Le Carré.
One enthusiastic review on Goodreads praised the book, stating: "Dan Fesperman is a worthy heir. The weaving together of the two stories, 1979 and 2014, is masterful. Safe Houses is a minor classic. George Smiley would approve." The novel is the first in a trilogy, potentially laying the groundwork for a successful franchise for Apple TV.
Menzies' Recent Projects and Reunion with Apple
This marks Menzies' reunion with Apple following his appearance in the streamer's 2025 film F1 alongside Brad Pitt. The actor is also widely recognized for his portrayal of Prince Philip in Netflix's The Crown and will next appear in Ruben Östlund's A24 film The Entertainment System Is Down.
With its combination of a talented cast, experienced directors, and a critically acclaimed source material, Safe Houses is shaping up to be a must-watch addition to Apple TV's thriller lineup. While no official release date has been announced, fans can anticipate a series full of tension, intrigue, and high-stakes drama.
