Former radio presenter Sandra Gordon has lent her voice to a new Windrush project in Birmingham, recording oral histories of the Windrush generation to ensure their stories are preserved for future generations.
Project Aims to Capture Living Memory
The project, titled 'Windrush Voices', seeks to document the experiences of Caribbean migrants who arrived in the UK between 1948 and 1971. Gordon, who previously worked for BBC Radio WM, said the initiative is close to her heart as her own parents were part of the Windrush generation.
Gordon recorded interviews with several members of the community, capturing their journeys, struggles, and contributions to British society. The recordings will be archived at the Library of Birmingham and made available online.

According to Gordon, the project is a way to honour her parents and the sacrifices they made. 'My parents came here with nothing but hope, and they worked hard to build a life. This project is about making sure their stories are never forgotten,' she said.
The Windrush scandal, which saw many long-term UK residents wrongly denied rights, has highlighted the need to preserve these histories. Gordon hopes the project will also educate younger generations about the Windrush generation's impact on British culture and society.
Community Support and Future Plans
The project has received support from local community groups and the Birmingham City Council. Organisers plan to expand the collection to include interviews with descendants of the Windrush generation, exploring how their heritage has shaped their identities.
Gordon added: 'This is not just about looking back; it's about understanding our present and building a better future. I encourage everyone with a Windrush connection to share their story.'
