Pierre Deny, the French actor best known for playing fashion CEO Louis de Léon in Netflix's Emily in Paris, has passed away at the age of 69. His family confirmed that he died after a sudden and severe battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
ALS Diagnosis and Passing
Deny died on Monday, May 25, following a rapid and aggressive progression of ALS, a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. In a statement, his daughters said: "It is with deep emotion that we announce the passing of Pierre Deny, which occurred this Monday following a sudden and severe case of ALS." ALS is a fatal disorder with no cure, leading to muscle paralysis and loss of ability to move, speak, eat, and breathe.
Career Highlights
Deny began his career in theatre and gained fame for his role as Dr. Renaud Dumaze in the French soap opera Demain nous appartient, appearing in over 500 episodes. He also played Captain Phillipe Kremen in Une femme d'honneur. In Emily in Paris, his character Louis de Léon was the CEO of fashion giant JVMA, working alongside Sylvie Grateau (played by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu). The show, starring Lily Collins, is set to air its sixth and final season.
Tributes from Co-Stars and Fans
Following the news, tributes poured in from colleagues and admirers. Bulgarian-French singer and actress Sylvie Vartan, who worked with Deny in a play by Isabelle Mergault, wrote on Instagram: "It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Pierre Deny. I shared many wonderful moments with him on stage. He was a generous actor and a sensitive and funny man. In these painful moments, my thoughts are with his family and loved ones."
Luce Mouchel, his co-star in Demain nous appartient, shared an emotional tribute: "Pierre, 7 years of filming together, taking the train together, having lunch at the canteen together. Sometimes confiding, inviting each other from time to time and congratulating you for your hidden cooking talent, meeting our girls, clapping at the theater, calling each other 'Doctor' usually, and I forget. A short decade of shared life that should not have ended so quickly and so brutally. I'm thinking of your daughters and their exceptional courage. Thinking of you, my last visit and your sparkling eyes, rest in peace, Dr. Dumaze."
Fans also expressed their sorrow on social media, remembering Deny's warmth and talent. His contributions to French television and international streaming will not be forgotten.
