Spring Sounds: A Free Community Music Festival in Kingston

Spring Sounds is a free, one-day public music event designed as a relaxed, drop-in experience for people of all ages. Delivered by Kingston Music Service in partnership with Kingston University’s Department of Education and Department of Performing Arts, and supported by Arts Council England, the event will take place at Kingston University’s Town House.

Event Highlights and Activities

The festival will feature performances, workshops, and hands-on musical activities throughout the day. Visitors can enjoy a wide programme of live music, including a Brazilian drumming and marching band workshop, a family concert, and a choir showcase. There will also be intergenerational and massed performances to bring the community together.

Attendees will have plenty of opportunities to participate actively. Activities include trying orchestral instruments, playing in an orchestra, composing music using graphics, and joining Balinese gamelan workshops. These interactive sessions aim to make music accessible and engaging for everyone.

Special Focus on Early Years and Education

Special sessions are planned for young children, with early years music activities for ages 0-4 and music tasters for Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils. The day will also include talks and training sessions exploring why music matters in the early years, the benefits of joining ensembles and choirs, and creative approaches to teaching and family engagement.

This emphasis on education highlights the event's goal to celebrate music-making across Kingston, from early years through to adulthood. It aims to encourage community participation and access to music, animate the Town House as a civic and cultural space, and strengthen collaboration between education, community, and culture.

Community Impact and Collaboration

By bringing together Kingston Music Service, Kingston University, and Arts Council England, Spring Sounds fosters a vibrant cultural exchange. The event not only provides entertainment but also promotes lifelong learning and artistic expression, making it a cornerstone for local cultural development.
