UB40 First Band at Birmingham City's New Stadium

Birmingham City fans have a reason to celebrate as local reggae band UB40 is set to be the first act to perform at the club's planned new stadium. The 62,000-capacity venue is still in the planning stages, but lead singer Robin Campbell has confirmed ongoing discussions with club chairman Tom Wagner about the inaugural concert.

UB40's Connection to Birmingham City

Campbell revealed that he directly asked Wagner to ensure UB40 would be the first band to play at the new stadium. "I actually said to Tom: 'Don't forget. When you open the new stadium, we're the first band you will have there'," Campbell told BirminghamLive. Wagner reportedly responded positively, saying, "We'll make that happen." The band is also open to performing additional shows at the current St Andrew's ground.

Strong Ties Despite Criticism

UB40 has long been associated with Birmingham City, a connection that has drawn criticism from Aston Villa supporters. Campbell addressed this, stating: "Villa fans hate the fact we're connected to Birmingham City, but as far as we're concerned, we're all Brummies." The band remains proud of their Birmingham roots and their link to the Blues.

Upcoming Tour and Album

UB40 is preparing for an international tour this year, with a new album expected in the summer. They will also perform a homecoming gig at the bp pulse LIVE arena on Saturday, June 20. Drummer Jimmy Brown promised an authentic live experience: "You're going to see a real band for a start. We're not miming and don't use pre-recorded backing tracks."

Interactive Concert Experience

The 11-piece band aims to create an interactive experience, blending classic hits with new material to get audiences "out their seats." Fans can expect a dynamic show that celebrates both the band's legacy and their new music.
