Venue Cymru in Llandudno to Receive £20m Revamp Starting 2026
Venue Cymru to Get £20m Revamp from 2026

Llandudno's Venue Cymru is set to undergo a major £20 million transformation, with construction potentially beginning this year. Conwy Council had already secured £10 million from the UK Government for the project. Now, Ambition North Wales has approved the outline business case for £5 million in Growth Deal funding towards the Venue Cymru Futures project.

Investment and Funding

The North Wales Growth Deal, overseen by Ambition North Wales, aims to bring £1 billion in investment to the region's economy, with £240 million committed by the Welsh and UK governments. A total capital investment of £19.7 million is required for the Venue Cymru project, supplemented by £14.7 million in match funding from the Welsh Government's Transforming Towns fund and the Arts Council of Wales.

Project Benefits

Ambition North Wales states that the redevelopment will secure the long-term future of Venue Cymru by modernising its facilities and creating a new cultural hub that supports jobs, skills, and innovation in the creative sector. The project aims to create 59 new jobs by 2036 and provide training and engagement opportunities for 350 people. It will also add 900 square metres of new flexible space, including a new stage docking lobby and refurbished auditorium facilities, bar, and restaurant areas.

Community Impact

The redevelopment has already seen Llandudno Library and Tourist Information Centre relocate from the town centre to the venue, a move that has been widely criticised locally for reducing footfall on the high street. A spokesperson commented: "The new development will bring enhanced capabilities to the 31-year-old venue, with spotlight concerts and shows set to attract new local audiences as well as visitors from further afield."

Official Statements

Cllr Mark Pritchard, chair of Ambition North Wales, said: "Venue Cymru plays a critical role in the cultural and economic life of North Wales. This investment will future-proof a much-loved asset, create new jobs, drive innovation in the creative industries, and protect vital services for residents and visitors. We are proud to support a project that delivers directly against our Growth Deal priorities."

Cllr Julie Fallon, leader of Conwy County Borough Council and lead member for Ambition North Wales's Agri-food and Tourism Programme, added: "This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure Venue Cymru's future as a world-class venue and a cornerstone of our visitor economy. The redevelopment will not only upgrade the building but make it a space for everyone, supporting local businesses and creating new opportunities for young people. This project ensures Venue Cymru can remain competitive, financially resilient, and fit for future generations."

Timeline

Subject to final approvals, including for the full business case, construction will begin in 2026, with phased completion from 2027 and full opening of the cultural hub in 2028.
