Welsh Camerata Celebrates Women Composers in Roath

The Welsh Camerata is preparing a special afternoon concert in Roath to celebrate the beautiful music created by women across the centuries. This local performance will take place at St Edward's Church on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

The event highlights the work of Maddalena Casulana, who became the first woman to ever have her music published during the 16th century. In her work, she wrote: "I want to show the world, as much as I can in this profession of music, the vain error of men that they alone possess the gifts of intellect and artistry."

The concert includes one of her madrigals alongside five pieces by the famous 17th-century composer Barbara Strozzi. Many of the featured composers were noblewomen who lived as nuns and were allowed to share their musical talents within the convent.

Music lovers can look forward to hearing pieces by Vittoria Aleotti, Leonora d'Este, Isabella Leonarda, Orsina Vizzana, Caterina Assandra, and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani.

The programme travels as far back as the 12th century with music from the talented Hildegard of Bingen. A trio sonata by Élisabeth Claude Jacquet de la Guerre, who played for the court of Louis XIV, will provide a lovely contrast to the choral singing.

Led by Frederick Brown, the performance begins at 4.30pm on Westville Road. Tickets are available on the door for £14, with £7 concessions for under 18s, full-time students or benefits claimants.
