A Birmingham university graduate, who believed the Covid-19 pandemic had destroyed her theatrical ambitions, is now living her dream on the very stage she once feared would remain closed forever.
From Lockdown Despair to Centre Stage
Ashleigh Schuman, a 24-year-old Philosophy graduate from the University of Birmingham in Edgbaston, endured the isolation of online lectures and showcases over Zoom during her studies. The enforced closure of theatres, including Birmingham's The Alexandra, led to widespread fears that the industry might never recover. For Ashleigh, this period was particularly devastating, as she confronted the possibility that her career aspirations were "null and void".
Ironically, she never had the chance to see a performance at The Alexandra as a student, as it was shut soon after she arrived in the city. Yet, in a remarkable twist of fate, she is now performing on its stage.
A Dream Role in a Beloved Musical
After graduating in 2022 and further training at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, Ashleigh's perseverance has paid off. She has secured a coveted part in the acclaimed UK tour of the Olivier Award-winning musical Fiddler On The Roof.
She plays Shprintze, one of the younger daughters, and is also the cover for two lead roles, Hodel and Chava. The production runs at The Alexandra theatre until January 3, offering Ashleigh an emotional homecoming.
"This is a dream role for me and my first big role since graduating," said Ashleigh. "Coming to Birmingham and now getting to finally be inside The Alexandra is quite emotional for me, but I'm loving having the chance to perform here."
A Message of Hope and Family
The musical, featuring timeless songs like If I Were A Rich Man and Tradition, tells a poignant story about family, love, and challenging traditions. Ashleigh highlights its powerful message, especially during the festive season, noting the importance of acceptance and common humanity.
"The message in this musical is important and really meaningful, but there's also a lot of humour," she explained. "We've been getting standing ovations every night and I feel that the audience is really responding and connecting to it."
For the young actress who once feared her future was over, the present is bright. Tickets for Fiddler On The Roof at The Alexandra theatre start from £29.
