A classic fairy tale has been given a distinctive Birmingham twist this festive season, delighting audiences at a historic city theatre. The Old Rep's 2025 pantomime production of Cinderella has reimagined the beloved story, setting it in the heart of the West Midlands with plenty of local humour and charm.
A Brummie Tale for a Modern Audience
Directed by Lorna Laidlaw, this family-friendly production marks a special milestone: 10 years of BOA Christmas at The Old Rep. The show is a collaboration with BOA Birmingham, with a significant portion of the impressive set design crafted by the academy's students.
This version cleverly transplants the story to Birmingham, starting with a witty nod to the local bin strikes that began in March 2025, a situation familiar to many Brummies. The authentic Brummie accents heard on stage added a layer of relatable entertainment for the local audience. At its core, the story follows Cinderella, played by Jaiden Tsang, who bonds with Prince Charming (Stefan Davis) over a shared love of dance. After being invited to the ball, she leaves behind her silver Converse shoes, sending the prince on a quest across Birmingham to find her.
Local Flair and Comic Genius
The production is packed with Birmingham-specific jokes and musical numbers. One highlight is a lively reworking of 'Good Morning, Baltimore' into 'Good Morning Birmingham'. The step-sisters' quest for a wealthy husband includes a humorous debate over whether to hunt in Sutton Coldfield or Solihull.
The show's success is driven by its brilliant comedic performances. Julie Ann Baker commands the stage as the classic panto villain, Baroness Hardup, Cinderella's wicked stepmother, earning playful jeers from the audience. Jordan Laidley brings constant laughs as Dandini, the Prince's companion, while Therese Collins provides a warm, anchoring presence as the Fairy Godmother.
The Standout 'Selfie Sisters'
A particular comic triumph comes from Cinderella's step-sisters, Chloe and Kim, dubbed the 'Selfie Sisters'. Played with fabulous energy by Sam Yetunde and Victoria Tew, their modern influencer-style branding and vibrant pink and yellow outfits were a visual treat. Their up-to-date humour provided laughs that both children and parents could appreciate.
Running for over two hours, the performance is an enchanting mix of laughter, vibrant song, and festive cheer. The entertaining theatrics, including energetic dance numbers, create a truly moving and joyful Christmas experience.
The Old Rep's Cinderella is a must-see for families looking for festive fun and runs until 31 December 2025. Tickets are available for booking now.
