Rocky Horror Show at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre: A Newbie's Obsession
As a complete newcomer to the Rocky Horror Show, I attended a performance at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre with only a vague memory of the film from years ago. Accompanied by an equally puzzled novice, we were immediately struck by the vibrant audience members who had dressed the part for their big night out. Golden glitter hats, face paint, fishnets with suspenders—it was a spectacle that set the tone for an unforgettable evening. Only this cult classic could inspire such bold fashion statements in Wolverhampton city centre on a Monday night.
A Screamingly Funny and Blush-Inducing Experience
The show proved to be screamingly funny, making me both blush and bellow with laughter. Filled with showstoppers, scandal, and sensuality, it delivered a rollercoaster of emotions. One aspect I was not prepared for was the intense audience participation. At first, I thought the rowdy crowd had forgotten their theatre etiquette, but I soon realized it was all part of the good-humored fun that defines this production.
Dynamic Cast and Engaging Performances
The Narrator, Jackie Clune, expertly bounced off the devoted crowd, riling them up for an evening of teasing and time warps. A well-placed Donald Trump gag perfectly set the tone for the wild ride ahead. The full dedication of the incredible cast was a joy to watch. Stephen Webb as Frank-N-Furter reaffirmed his belief that everyone should wear fishnets, with every glamorous entrance scene-stealing—his hip swing alone signaled this was a sparkling show.
Brad and Janet, played by James Bisp and Haley Flaherty, portrayed the perfect cutesy naïve couple turned corrupted, making it impossible not to cheer and cringe at their antics. As the show progressed, more legs were barred, and vocals shone from within laced corsets, adding to the heavenly spectacle.
An Obsession Born from Cult Classic Charm
By the end of the performance, I found myself as crazy as the rest of the audience, time-warping my way to the tram stop or train station. This cult classic has left me utterly obsessed, proving why it remains beloved by millions. The Rocky Horror Show is at the Wolverhampton Grand until Saturday, April 18, after which the tour moves on to Eastbourne, York, Cambridge, and The Alexandra in Birmingham.
