Tameside Libraries Launch 2026 National Year of Reading with Free Events
Tameside Libraries Celebrate 2026 Year of Reading

Tameside Libraries are launching an exciting programme to celebrate the 2026 National Year of Reading, with a host of free activities and sessions designed to inspire residents to read for pleasure and visit their local libraries. The monthly events aim to foster a joy of books and reading across all ages and abilities, revitalising the community's engagement with literature.

Diverse Activities for All Ages

The library service is offering sessions in many different formats, ensuring there is something for everyone. This year's theme, 'Go All In', encourages people to explore reading about whatever interests them most, helping to raise awareness of the benefits such as expanded vocabulary, increased creativity, and a sharper mind.

Readathon for National Read Aloud Day

A highlight of the celebrations is a 'readathon' scheduled for February 4 at Ashton Library, in honour of National Read Aloud Day. From 10.30am to 4.30pm, readers will take turns sharing stories aloud in a continuous relay. Invited participants include local authors and members of readers' groups, who will read from their own works and favourite pieces of literature.

Residents can watch the event either by dropping in or via a livestream on the Library Facebook page @tamesidelibraries, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Storytelling Sessions During National Storytelling Week

For National Storytelling Week, running from January 31 to February 8, every Tameside library will host after-school storytelling sessions. These events are tailored to engage younger readers and families, promoting a love of stories and community interaction.

Special Membership Cards for 2026

To mark this celebratory year, residents who join Tameside Libraries in 2026 will receive a shiny gold-coloured membership card. This initiative aims to honour the importance of reading and encourage new members to explore the library's resources.

Council Support for Lifelong Learning

Tameside Council executive member for lifelong learning and culture, Cllr Leanne Feeley, expressed enthusiasm for the programme: "We are so excited to step into the year of reading. Our libraries have a fantastic programme of activities and sessions designed to inspire residents to read more. Reading offers so many benefits, and we're encouraging everyone across Tameside to get involved. Come along and discover what your local library has to offer!"

The activities are part of a broader effort to support community engagement and lifelong learning in Tameside, Greater Manchester.
