A Solihull school has announced its closure, citing financial pressures that 'proved impossible to overcome'. Ruckleigh School, located on Lode Lane, will shut at the end of the academic year, with the final day of term on Wednesday, July 8.
Reasons for Closure
The independent preparatory school, which opened in 1957, said the decision was not taken lightly. In a letter to parents, the school explained that rising operating costs, ongoing cost-of-living pressures affecting families, changing demographic trends leading to reduced pupil numbers, and the introduction of VAT on independent school fees from January 2025 had created insurmountable financial challenges.
With a capacity of 241 pupils, the school had seen numbers drop to 164, which was described as 'a significant challenge'. The school added that sector-wide reports indicate many independent schools have experienced declining enrolment and increasing financial strain following the VAT change, alongside broader economic and demographic challenges.
Support for Families and Staff
Families will be supported to find alternative primary schools, while staff will be assisted in their next steps. The school stated that its immediate priority is to support pupils, families, and staff throughout the transition period. Further information regarding transition arrangements will be communicated directly to parents and staff in the coming weeks.
School's Legacy
The school expressed gratitude to pupils, parents, staff, alumni, and supporters who contributed to Ruckleigh's success over the years. It noted that the school's legacy will endure through the achievements and memories of the many children whose lives were enriched by their time at Ruckleigh.
