Engineering Students Honoured for Mathematical Excellence
Two talented engineering students from Grŵp Llandrillo Menai have achieved national recognition for their significant improvements in mathematics. Lewis Cahill from Abergele and Kenan Davies-Zlu from Holyhead have both received prestigious Financial Literacy Improvement Awards from The Worshipful Livery Company of Wales (WLCOW).
Lewis's Journey to Success
Lewis Cahill, who studies Level 3 Engineering at Coleg Llandrillo in Rhyl, secured a £500 award from WLCOW after achieving a C grade in GCSE Maths this summer. His mathematical journey saw him working closely with skills tutor Cheryl Stewart while studying Level 2 Engineering last year, where he developed the numeracy skills necessary to progress to his current course.
"I'm very happy that my tutors believed in me to do well on the course," Lewis commented. "They were a massive help and were good with explaining it all. I'm now looking forward to completing my Level 3 course next year, and after that hopefully joining the RAF or finding a job or an apprenticeship in engineering."
His tutor Cheryl expressed her pride, stating: "Lewis has made lots of progress. He stuck with it and believed in himself, and sure enough when the results came out he got the C. He didn't give up when times were hard, and now this year he's flying."
Kenan's Mathematical Achievement
Kenan Davies-Zorlu, studying Level 3 Engineering at Coleg Menai in Llangefni, demonstrated similar dedication to improving his mathematical abilities. He earned a £100 award from WLCOW after achieving Application of Number (AoN) Level 2 at his first attempt, having previously passed AoN Level 1 the year before under the guidance of skills tutor Dafydd Alun Roberts.
"I like maths anyway but improving my skills has helped me on my course," Kenan explained. "The support from my tutor was great - he helped me learn things I hadn't been able to do previously."
Dafydd added: "It's been a real pleasure to teach Kenan over the past couple of years. He is hungry for knowledge and has made really good progress in his numeracy skills at college, while also developing his academic knowledge and independence."
Supporting Welsh Talent
The Worshipful Livery Company of Wales, founded in 1993 as the Welsh Livery Guild and receiving its Royal Charter in 2013, remains dedicated to helping young people throughout Wales develop their talents and skills. Their annual awards programme provides scholarships and bursaries to students across schools, universities, technical colleges, apprenticeships, and young people in the armed forces.
Both students' achievements highlight the importance of developing strong maths skills for success in engineering and technical careers, demonstrating how dedication and quality teaching can transform student outcomes in further education.
