Brits Warned Not to Use Electric Fans as 40C Heatwave Hits UK
Electric Fans Useless Above 35C in UK Heatwave

A rare red weather warning is in place across Birmingham and much of the UK as temperatures are expected to soar to 40°C, surpassing the June record of 35.6°C set in 1976. The Met Office warning, issued for Wednesday and Thursday, has led to school closures and the cancellation of attractions across the West Midlands.

Electric Fans Ineffective Above 35°C

While many instinctively reach for electric fans during a heatwave, experts warn they are only effective below 35°C. Electric fans do not lower room temperature; they simply circulate air. The government's heatwave plan confirms that fans provide no real relief when temperatures exceed 35°C, as they can actually increase heat stress by blowing hot air onto the body.

Government Heatwave Advice

The government has issued a list of recommendations to help the public cope with the extreme heat:

  • Stay out of direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm.
  • Apply high-factor sunscreen frequently and wear a wide-brimmed hat in shaded areas.
  • Keep windows and curtains shut in sun-facing rooms during the day.
  • Open windows at night when the outside air is cooler, and encourage airflow.
  • Avoid vigorous physical activity; exercise only during cooler parts of the day.
  • Stay out of hot, enclosed spaces like stationary vehicles.
  • Wear loose, light-coloured clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day; consider rehydration drinks if sweating heavily.
  • Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake, as they contribute to dehydration.
  • Mist skin with cool water or use cold packs wrapped in cloth under armpits or on the neck.
  • Switch off non-essential electrical devices that generate heat.

Health Risks and Red Alert

A red heat health alert has been issued across England, indicating a risk to life even for the healthy population. Night-time temperatures are expected to remain above 20°C, providing little relief. It is essential to check on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbours, and to ask for help if you are at greater risk.
