Monty Don's November Gardening Alert: Safety Tips & Christmas Flowers
Monty Don's November Gardening Safety Warning

Beloved gardening expert Monty Don has issued an important safety warning for all gardeners this November, highlighting a common but dangerous hazard that emerges in autumn gardens.

Tackling Slippery Garden Paths

The Gardeners' World presenter specifically warned about the risks posed by brick and stone paths during the colder months. He identified algae growth as the primary culprit, particularly on surfaces that remain wet and shaded. These conditions can persist for months, creating persistently slippery and dangerous walkways.

Monty recommended a practical solution: "The best way to reduce the slipperiness is to wash off the algae with a pressure hose". For those without this equipment, he noted that daily hire is readily available. After pressure washing, gardeners should brush sharp sand into the surface, which porous materials will absorb.

For a quicker alternative, he suggested working sand directly into the path with a stiff brush, describing it as "still quite laborious" but effective. Both methods provide a chemical-free way to restore safety to garden pathways throughout winter.

Plant Now for Christmas Blooms

Beyond safety concerns, Monty revealed the perfect floral timing for Christmas celebrations. He advised that paperwhite daffodils (narcissi papyraceus) planted at the beginning of November will flower by December 25th.

Unlike most daffodil varieties, these Mediterranean natives don't require a cold vernalisation period. Simply plant the bulbs just below compost surface in any container with drainage, though regular bowls work with added charcoal to maintain soil freshness.

Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged in a warm, bright spot. The bulbs will flower within four weeks when kept indoors in warmth. To extend the blooming period, Monty recommends moving them to a cool but frost-free location once growth appears.

Essential Winter Lawnmower Maintenance

Before storing your lawnmower for winter, Monty stresses that now is the ideal time for thorough maintenance rather than waiting until spring's busy season.

His comprehensive checklist includes:

  • Washing down the machine and scraping off encrusted grass
  • Draining all petrol from the tank
  • Checking and tightening all screws and bolts
  • Oiling blades and moving parts
  • Arranging professional servicing and sharpening unless performance is exceptional

Proper storage in a dry, secure location ensures your mower will be ready for immediate use when the next cutting season begins, performing reliably throughout.
