Street Cleaners Rescue Kittens Dumped in Bag in Atherstone

Council street cleaners David and Carl made a heartwarming discovery while working at Royal Meadow Drive Recreation Ground in Atherstone early on Saturday, April 25, 2026. At around 6:30am, they found a plastic bag containing at least eight kittens that had been callously abandoned.

Immediate Rescue and Care

The kittens were alive but in urgent need of medical attention. Carl took them home and then to a veterinary clinic for assessment. Some required specialist care, including being placed in an incubator and receiving regular feeding.

North Warwickshire Borough Council praised the swift actions of David and Carl, stating: “Council street cleaners David and Carl made an unexpected discovery while carrying out their duties at Royal Meadow Drive Recreational Area at around 6:30am on Saturday, April 25. During their work in the area, they came across a number of abandoned kittens. All of the kittens were found to be alive. Recognising the urgency of the situation, David and Carl acted quickly to ensure the animals received immediate care. The kittens were taken to Carl’s home before being safely transported to the vets for assessment and treatment.”

Veterinary Treatment and Thanks

Veterinary staff confirmed that the kittens required specialist care, including incubator support and regular feeding. The council extended its gratitude to David and Carl for their professionalism and compassion, as well as to Carl’s family for their immediate support in assisting with the animals prior to veterinary treatment.
